Amid all the anxiety, uncertainty and deep sadness caused by the corona virus pandemic the news that Whisper My Secret was in the list of Best Adoption Books Of All Time was a huge boost to my spirits. For me, the heartbreak of seeing long queues of people lining up for Government welfare payments and the closing of businesses was exacerbated when my big brother Bobby died in late March in Queensland. The rules of social distancing and closing of borders meant his family was not able to honour him with a funeral. The whole situation was almost too much for me and I plummeted into a state of melancholy. Generous acts of kindness, offers of support by friends and the passing of time has allowed me to recover my equilibrium. Each day I encounter something new to help counteract the cheerlessness of the situation we are all in - from the unexpected appearance of a colourful chalk hopscotch drawing on the footpath outside my gate to the above announcement about Whisper My Secret. For many in Australia and thousands in other countries the pandemic has caused extreme wretchedness. I hope others also find gems, great and small, to help them bear up.
